When Fujinuma Satoru's mother is murdered by an unknown assailant, he is suddenly sends him back 18 years to when he was in elementary school, and this gives him the chance to prevent a kidnapping incident that took the lives of three of his classmates.

A struggling manga author with a supernatural power that enables, or rather, forces him to prevent deaths and catastrophes that happen near him by sending him back in time when an accident occurs, repeating the scene until the accident is prevented.
A ten-year-old girl who was one of Satoru Fujinuma's classmates. and the first victim of the serial killer/kidnapper. She went missing on the 2nd of March 1988. Her body was found a few days later once the snow had thawed.
Airi is a high school student and Satoru's co-worker at Oasi Pizza. She gets involved with Satoru when she realised oddities as Satoru managed to save people from life-threatening incidents, and was one of the few who decided to trust Satoru when he was framed as his mother's murderer.
Sachiko is Satoru's mother and former news announcer. She knows about the cold cases of serial kidnapping in her town but decided to keep quiet and ignore it due to her child's growth and safety. However, after having eye contact with the criminal at his latest kidnapping attempt, she was silenced and killed by the kidnapper...
